‘ALL’ IS AN ILLUSION

Image
The saying “You can have it all” seems prevalent, especially as a motivational mantra to African women towards success. But what exactly does “all” mean? A present, fantastic, and phenomenal wife and mother who is also a leading CEO of one of the largest world companies? A student with straight A’s, rich parents, global recognition, partying and living the life? A highly skilled man with different estates to his name yet a present father and husband and maybe with an understanding mistress on the side? Where did the idea of “all” come from? Who made the criteria for “all”?  While it is possible to touch on different aspects of life, the question is: how probable is it to give a hundred percent to all?  It seems to elude humans of all creatures that every path has its price and pleasure; that no matter how glorious the concept of “you can have it all” is sold in the world of ambition and possibilities”, there are existing frameworks which reveal the truth about life, out of whi...

“WHEN IT COMES TO MY PERSONAL VALUES, I NEVER COMPROMISE; I HAVE MY KIDS LOOKING UP TO ME”: INTERVIEW WITH RAPPER-PROPHECY

Image
Hi, Prophecy. Thanks for obliging us. Your name sounds intriguing even though not trendy; so let's start with that. What inspired such an intriguing name? (smiles) Thanks for this opportunity, Favour. I’ve always wanted to be a conscious rapper and based on the kind of music I listen to and lifestyle that I live, I brainstormed on suitable names for my career and then chose Prophecy. That’s because Prophecy is different; it depicts the fear of God in me and my values.  Talking about personal values as a rapper, how do you prioritize your personal values and beliefs when it comes to choosing projects or collaborations in the entertainment industry? I’m very selective when it comes to collaborations. First, I listen to your music and if you don’t have a message, I don't work with you- no hard feelings; it’s just the boundaries I’ve built to preserve my values. Although, at the early stage of my career, I worked with some big sharks in the industry because all I was looking for wa...

ARE YOU THE CREATOR OR THE ‘CREMATED’?

Image
by Favour, The Writer Cremation refers to the process of disposing of a deceased person's body by burning it to ashes. Prior to cremation, the body undergoes preparation by a funeral home, which may include the removal of jewelry or medical devices. The prepared body is then placed in a suitable container, such as a casket, which is subsequently positioned in a chamber, also known as the retort. The chamber is heated, subjecting the body to intense heat and direct flames, with the aim of breaking it down and reducing it to its basic elements (ashes). Throughout this article, the deceased person who undergoes this process will be referred to as the 'cremated,' while the person performing the process is conventionally called the cremator. Creation, on the other hand, is the process of bringing something into existence. That is, the process of making or producing something that did not previously exist, whether it is a physical object, an artwork, a piece of literature, a mu...

HIGHER-ORDER THINKING: 3 WAYS CHATGPT WILL TRANSFORM EDUCATION FOR AFRICAN STUDENTS

Image
by Favour, The Writer During a trip to an AI conference in Ghana, I had an unexpected conversation at the immigration office that made me reflect on the fear of innovation prevalent in Africa. An officer had probed further into my purpose of visit and on mentioning that I was attending an AI conference, another official, listening in, exclaimed, "So you guys are the ones that want to strip people of their jobs!" The world we live in is undeniably a world of innovation. Looking back through history, we can draw parallels to previous eras of innovation, such as the industrial age where mechanical tools like tractors and mills improved manual labor in farming; and then the emergence of the ongoing Information Age where computers rendered skills like typewriting and shorthand obsolete. Going to a cybercafe to pay a browsing fee also faded with the emergence of Google. Formerly, we used to be amazed at a walking library (someone who recites a plethora of information offhand-recita...

A Lifetime Skill

Image
like every other skill, it's a process  not some butterfly in the air. knowledge is its anchor; it answers to practice not daydream. like every other skill it awakens strengths and strengthens weakness. it deserves multiple shots at mastery "ihunanya" depends on perception to win. it's a skill and like every other skill, embrace it as one- a lifetime skill.

BE OKAY STANDING ALONE

Image
When a question is asked in the classroom and everyone gives the same answer, have you noticed how you blend in with the unifying answer instead of speaking your thoughts?  That's it right there, friend. The Fear of Standing Alone.  🧾A proof is how you hit your palm against your forehead when the teacher affirms the answer you had in mind- the one you stifled because you sought confirmation from the crowd. 📌Have you noticed how you draw back when the whole class is required to attempt a written question, not because you do not have an idea but because you seek strings of attempts from your mates to follow suit?  Think of how you follow the rest of the class to say "yes" when the teacher asks the popular question "do you understand?" But as soon as someone says "No, I do not understand", you jump in- "I, too!" That's it again, right there. 🔝The above relatable scenerio might seem trivial but they embody an essential skill that spans b...

DO NOT CONFORM

Image
When you are told by your "friends" that you do not "belong", do not strive to belong. You will end up losing yourself at the end of the day. By losing yourself I mean your freedom to keep being you and expressing your self genuinely.  I've been a teenager before and I can say that it is an age where your contemporaries who seem like "wild cats" would want to win you over to their sides by intimidation and mockery.  ❌Don't give in.    Look, I understand that as a teenager, you crave freedom like you crave your favourite snack but you must also know that true freedom as a teenager is not throwing away your home-instilled values to the bin to fit into a certain circle of friends. Instead,  ✔️it is exercising the power to hold up such values as a proud custodian such that in any sea of friends you find yourself in, you will be the captain of your ship, those values being your compass. This is not necessarily to make your parents proud even though th...
