WHY WE DO THE THINGS WE DO

A woman was asked last week on CNN why she thought it important to come out and be vaccinated. Here is what she said “I have kids. I want to be able to hug them, kiss them, and be with them”.

Some children were playing outside their apartment with their friends. Sighting them from afar, their mother screamed “Come on, go inside; you are not the ones washing your clothes!”

Every morning, I walk towards my aloe plants to see how they are doing. I gave them actual names, acknowledging them as lives. I was laughed at and jokingly called crazy. In some months, my aloes began to flourish-fat, green and pleasant to behold. I reflected on why I showed this intense care to my plants and I realized that I wanted to see what it felt like to care and be cared for. I loved it.

‘Why we do the things we do’ is a question we all must answer to get in touch with the power of our motives. What matters and doesn’t, depend on our answers.

The woman taking the vaccine was inspired by love, not fear. My desire to nurture my aloes was not just for consumption; it was for love. I wish the mother who instructed her children to go in, did that from a place of concern for their safety rather than the thought of her having to wash their clothes - even though these children know how to turn guardians into thorough washing machines(pun intended).

What if we commit to making love the reason why we do what we do?

What if we made love the reason why we scold?

What if we connected with people and created memorable experiences because we love, not for the cliché thought of “no one knows tomorrow”?

What if we voiced our pain from a state of love, instead of revenge?

What if we made love the reason why we exercise, instead of desperation for a body goal?

What if we kept our bodies clean because we love it, instead of the fear of being smelly?

What if we genuinely admired because we love, not lust?

What if we put a signature of care on our plant, pets and belongings because we love, not just to consume?

What if we taught our children morals because we love them genuinely, not because we are scared of them bringing shame to us?

What if we made love the primary reason why we show up at work?

Beautiful people, it is a new week and the launch of a new month is close. Make LOVE your COMPASS in dealing with yourself and others.

YOU ARE LOVED.
